Organisers are delighted to report that despite the grey and windy weather, people started coming through the doors at St Mary’s Hall well before they officially opened on Saturday afternoon.

The society is celebrating its 75th year and the spring show had classes for flowers, vegetables and hobbies.

Carol Sullivan, chairman, said: “By 3pm, the hall was crowded with members, visitors and their families all admiring the exhibits and enjoying tea and homemade cakes.

“It was a pleasure to see younger members of the community taking an interest in the show.”

Three cups were presented, two of them going to Ron Sullivan, the society’s secretary. He won the Budge Cup for his vase of mixed daffodils and the Melhuish Trophy for the highest number of points gained in the plants and flowers categories.

The Peat Trophy was won by Mrs Pat Blackham, who gained the highest total of points in various categories in the past three shows.

Carol added: “We had a very successful day and anyone who is interested in joining our garden society can check our website to see our programme for this, our 75th year.”
