PICTURES: Pothole hell in Worthing

THE worst pothole plague to have hit Worthing in living memory is making life a risk-laden nightmare for local drivers trying to protect their expensive suspension and wheels.

We know all about the winter cold spell and penetrating frosts, but their legacy is living on and on amid an angry tide of complaints.

Well, the Herald has its own, anonymous, pothole prober, who's been looking into these town-wide menaces to our precious vehicles. Here's what he has to report...

Road renewal

"Isn't it time that West Sussex County Council published its schedule for replacing or renewing the roads of Worthing?

"I have noted with much interest the comments and letters in the local press and TV recently regarding the state of the roads in and around the town.

"I cannot recall the last time I saw any road in the Worthing area being renewed or replaced completely.

"Again, perhaps WSCC would like to publish the names of any roads that have been replaced or fully repaired in the last five years, not just patched-up.

Never-ending battle

"No longer can WSCC fight a never-ending battle against potholes and the like with a bucket of Tarmac and a shovel.

"I will tell them now; you are losing the battle and have no chance of winning the war.

"It is only a matter of time before the roads and general infrastructure of the roads in West Sussex revert to the dirt tracks they once were.

"We will all be able to do our bit for the green conservancy scheme by going back to horse and cart for transport.

"Worthing used to be a lovely little seaside town, historic, pretty, picturesque, cosy, but sadly no more.

"The powers-that-be can no longer look at it through rose-tinted spectacles.

"Perhaps if they insist on doing so, we should all be issued the same ones as part of a council tax refund.

"I'm sending the Herald (click on the view gallery link to see more larger versions of the thumbnail images) a number of photographs of fissures, gaps, cracks and, yes, potholes on the roads of Worthing, all between Broadwater and Worthing Pier, all taken within the last few days.

Hundreds of holes

"These are just some of the bigger ones; there are many hundreds, if not thousands, of smaller ones getting bigger by the day. I'll wager most people will recognise at least half of them.

"I understand that if we report these holes to WSCC, they will repair them within a few days.

"Should we have to, or even need to?

"They are all pretty damn obvious. Can we claim compensation from WSCC for damage to cars from driving down one of these holes?"
