Platinum pair celebrate with family and friends

Reg and Bertha Winton, both 92, had a party on Sunday at the Arun View in Littlehampton.

Reg was born in Cranworth Road, Worthing, and they first met when they were nine. His family ran a B&B and Bertha’s family, who lived in London, used to stay every year, so they often went to the beach together as children.

“We liked it there and we came down each year from about 1931 or 32 to 1938 but the war put a stop to it,” said Bertha.

They then lost contact for a while but towards the end of the war, Reg started to write to Bertha at her new address in Hayes.

He said: “We resumed our friendship after the war and very soon decided to get married.”

They were married on July 20, 1946, and set up home in Worthing, where they have lived ever since. They had one daughter and three sons but their eldest son died about 18 months ago.

Reg worked at Worthing Post Office for ten years, first as a telephonist a later as a counter clerk.

Reg said: “We worked upstairs in the Chapel Road post office and it was one of the biggest manual exchanges there ever was.”

He then became a civil servant and worked in the Inland Revenue for about 30 years.

The couple lived in Maybridge for 25 years and moved to Caxton Court, Broadwater Road, when the children grew up.

“It has been good all the way through,” said Reg.

“We have had our moments, we were never rich people. Moderation has been our buzzword.”
