Police arrest 42 in Worthing town centre crackdown

ARRESTS have been made in Worthing town centre as police try to clamp down on anti-social behaviour.

Police authorised a section 35 dispersal order on June 25, giving officers the power to move people from a specific area if they were behaving antisocially.

Anyone coming back into the area within 48 hours faces arrest.

Speaking today (August 3) PC Marvin Lucas, of Worthing’s neighbourhood policing team, said: “This dispersal zone will help us to combat anti-social behaviour which is primarily caused by the street-drinking community in the town centre.

“The dispersal orders have been reviewed every 48 hours since it came in to make sure it is still required and will continue throughout the summer.

“We are keen for the public to report any anti-social issues in this area.”

According to police, 42 people have been arrested so far, with alleged offences ranging from being drunk and disorderly, failing to leave the dispersal zone and shoplifting.

The dispersal zone is between West Street and the Splashpoint Leisure Centre and includes Montague Street. It will last throughout the summer, said police.

A spokesman added: “The order is not designed to create an exclusion zone or a curfew area, but is intended to make the area more pleasant for those who live, work and visit.

“Police will not necessarily disperse people in this area just because they are in a group; it is aimed at giving police additional powers to deal more effectively with groups cause problems in the area.”

Sussex Police said it was working with Worthing Borough Council and a ‘wide range of partners’ to address the needs and the impact of the street community in Worthing.
