Police offer £1,000 reward after attempted murder at Goring petrol station

POLICE are offering a £1,000 reward for information after a gunman tried to kill a petrol station worker in a botched robbery.

Two masked men walked into the Texaco Garage in Goring Way, Worthing, at 5.30am on December 21 and demanded money.

One of the men produced a handgun, believed to be a revolver, and threatened the brave shopworker, a 67-year-old man, but they ran off empty-handed when he refused to hand over any cash and challenged them.

The fleeing gunman then fired at the pensioner as he tried to chase them out of the shop.

A police spokesman said the shooting was being treated as attempted murder.

He added: "From detailed investigation and examination of CCTV footage it is now clear that the offenders aimed at him with a revolver, shouted muffled noises and fired after he made to chase them from the shop.

"The bullet narrowly missed him and hit a wall. Police have recovered the bullet but the calibre of the revolver is not known."

The gunman is described as white, of medium build, just under 6ft, wearing a light-coloured hooded top, gloves, scarf and a lighter coloured hat under the zipped hooded top.

The second man is also white and of medium build, just over 6ft, wearing a dark hat with lighter circular emblems (tied under the chin), a dark jumper, lighter under the chin, and possibly a scarf, dark jeans and trainers. He was carrying a full rucksack on his back.

Detective Inspector Trevor Bates said: "This is a very serious matter. The man was not hurt but was very lucky not to have been killed or seriously injured.

"We are hoping that the reward, and the CCTV images, will jog memories of the event and produce that vital piece of information."

A 1,000 reward is on offer for information leading to the conviction of the men.
