The attacker is described as white, about 5ft. 7-8ins. and in his late 30s. He was wearing a beige padded jacket.

Police said the victim was shocked but otherwise unhurt.

PC Elrick said: "I am appealing to anyone with information to come forward.

"A man has lain in wait for ths woman on her way to work.

"She is unhurt but badly shocked.

"It is not clear whether the offender was wearing a balaclava at the time. A member of the ambulance staff saw a man walking away shortly afterwards wearing a balaclava. We need him to come forward to eliminate him from our inquiries.

"There must have been other people in the area despite the early hour.
