Police to put stop to street drinker issue

POLICE have promised to clamp down on street drinking and antisocial behaviour in Worthing town centre which has concerned residents and businesses.

People going to the toilet, drinking and fights in Liverpool Terrace and Montague Street have prompted a spike in complaints to Worthing Pier county councillor Michael Cloake in recent weeks.

But after Sussex Police were made aware of the issues, they have pledged to focus on tackling the problem.

Chief inspector Jo Banks, district commander for Adur and Worthing, said police were aware of concerns, and had planned a series of operations.

She said: “There has been a significant increase in the amount of street drinkers in Liverpool Gardens recently, which has resulted in concerns raised to our PCSOs by local traders.

“I recognise the concerns raised, and have set up a number of initiatives to increase the enforcement side of our response.”

Police are working with a number of organisations in order to address the problems.
