Police to wear body armour

BODY armour will be issued to all frontline officers in Sussex Police over the next 18 months.

Police say the decision by Chief Constable Ken Jones follows months of discussion.

Staff working in areas of greatest risk will be issued with the protective clothing first.

The new equipment is said to have been designed with comfort and flexibility in mind. The aim is to allow officers to be able to wear it for the whole of their shifts, if necessary.

Assistant Chief Constable Nigel Yeo says the decision has been taken to help officers feel safer in difficult situations and to work with other protection such as Captor spray to keep down the level of attacks on officers.
