All Sussex MPs bar two back air strikes on ISIL targets in Syria

Andrew Tyrie, MP for Chichester, was one of only seven Tories to vote against military action after a ten hour debate in the House of Commons last night, while Green MP for Brighton Pavilion Caroline Lucas, also voted in opposition.

Peter Kyle, Hove MP, was one of the 66 Labour MPs to side with the Government and Prime Minister David Cameron said they had ‘taken the right decision to keep the country safe’.

The final vote was carried by 397 to 223 with Crawley MP Henry Smith, Mid Sussex MP Sir Nicholas Soames, Bognor Regis and Littlehampton MP Nick Gibb, East Worthing and Shoreham MP Tim Loughton, Horsham MP Jeremy Quin, Nick Herbert, Arundel and South Downs MP, Sir Peter Bottomley, Worthing West MP, Amber Rudd, Hastings and Rye MP, Lewes MP Maria Caulfield, Wealden MP Nus Ghani, Eastbourne MP Caroline Ansell, Bexhill and Battle MP Huw Merriman, and Brighton Kemptown MP Simon Kirby all backing military intervention by the UK.

Before voting against the Government, Mr Tyrie said he had not heard enough justification for the intervention.

He said: “The timing of this vote has everything to do with the opportunity to secure a majority provided by the shocking attacks in Paris.

“Everybody feels a bond with the French, but an emotional reflex is not enough. Military action might be effective at some point, but military action without a political strategy is folly. We have yet to hear that strategy, so I cannot support the Government’s motion tonight.”

After the debate, Mr Loughton tweeted: “Majority 174 2 extend current British military involvement in Iraq into Syria-right result after a good debate but no grounds 4 complacency.”

Meanwhile Dr Lucas added: “Thanks to all who campaigned to say #DontBombSyria - struggle goes on. Will go on opposing & do all I can to hold Gov to account #SyriaVote.”

The debate saw scores of MPs speak on the issue, with voting taking place shortly after 10pm.

Members from all parties applauded after a rousing speech from Labour shadow foreign secretary Hilary Benn, who urged his colleagues to vote in favour of the motion.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn had earlier called for MPs to oppose the bombings.

Mr Benn said: “We are faced by fascists — not just their calculated brutality, but their belief that they are superior to every single one of us in this chamber tonight and all the people we represent.

“They hold us in contempt. They hold our values in contempt. They hold our belief in tolerance and decency in contempt. They hold our democracy — the means by which we will make our decision tonight — in contempt.”

RAF jets took to the skies for the first air strikes just hours after the Commons vote.
