Council cuts to full-time staff on track

WEST Sussex County Council is on target to cut its workforce to 5,000 full-timers in the next two years as part of a multi-million-pound package of savings, its cabinet has been told.

Members were told the workforce was continuing to reduce in line with projections agreed by the county council in February, 2011.

The total number of full-time equivalent staff at the end of February this year was 5,562.

Of these, 5,079 are employed, 270 are agency and 213 are casual workers.

Reporting on the council’s cost-cutting measures, Michael Brown, cabinet finance member, said the good news was that every portfolio was either predicting to come in on budget or below, so the revenue outlook was pretty good.

The aim of saving £79million over three years, taking £37million out in the first year, was bang on target.
