Roy Williams, who is a retired Metropolitan Police Inspector, has lived in the South of England since the early 1980s.

He says he is concerned at the nature and style of policing being delivered by all forces and if elected in Sussex would ‘seek to bring some common sense, integrity and proportionality back’.

Given the huge demands on the modern police force, he wants to bring clarity to what should be policing priorities and in which areas they should be acting in more of an advisory capacity.

Mr Williams is an English Constitutionalist standing for the people’s ‘right to free assembly and free speech, the right to earn a living and the right to adequately protect oneself and one’s property without interference from the State’.

As an independent candidate without any political party influence, he believes his policing experience would mean a ‘much more critical eye’ cast over police activity and is also keen to take responsibility for and provide oversight over the police complaint system.

Other candidates are Lib Dem Jamie Bennett, Green Kahina Bouhassane, Conservative Katy Bourne and Labour and Co-operative Paul Richards

Polling day is Thursday May 6 with results expected on Monday May 10.

County council elections are also being held on the same day.
