Work to improve the western end of The Boulevard is likely to start in the new year after being given the go-ahead by Crawley Borough Council.

The £550,000 project was given the nod during a meeting of the planning committee on Tuesday (October 4).

It will include: the widening of the junction with The Broadway, the replacement of the pedestrian crossing outside the old Post Office with a toucan crossing for pedestrians and cyclists, and alterations to the service road which runs parallel with The Boulevard to improve pedestrian and cyclist safety.

The central of the three access roads near the old Post Office will be closed and, in line with the work already carried out at the other end of The Boulevard, there will be footpath and cycle path improvements.

The work forms part of the £60m Crawley Growth Programme aimed at unlocking jobs, business space and home building in the town.

A council spokesman said: “This scheme will improve transport facilities in the town centre for those travelling on foot, on bikes, on buses and in the car.

“This section of The Boulevard is currently a bottleneck for buses, causing delays and longer journeys; these changes will benefit more than 10 million bus users a year through improved journey times.

“The scheme also completes a vital link between the existing cycle infrastructure on the High Street and the new provision for cyclists, complementing the recently completed Eastern Gateway scheme.”
