Worthing Borough Council secured £2.1million from the local enterprise partnership to clear the site and create a 55-space surface car park in the north-west corner for railway station users and visitors to the town.

These works have come in significantly under budget so the remaining funds have been allocated for a range of different uses.

The remaining £889,095 can only be spent to support projects and initiatives associated with the redevelopment of Teville Gate and has to be used by March 2021.

On Tuesday, the council’s joint strategic committee agreed to make £357,500 available to West Sussex County Council for public realm improvements at Railway Approach.

This would be spent on developing further detailed designs and purchase of street furniture and materials.

These would look to tie in with those used on the more advanced project to improve Portland Road.

Back in October the council agreed to enter into a joint venture with Vivid Homes to redevelop Teville Gate after years of the private sector failing to get schemes off the ground.

Therefore the remaining £531,600 would be allocated to assist and support the joint venture partnership.

This money would go towards architectural designs and survey work to assist the submission of a planning application.

Dan Humphreys, leader of the council, said: “These are very legitimate ways of further bringing on the redevelopment of the site and the area around it and making it a part of Worthing that people can be proud of once more.”
