Back in 2018, Worthing Borough Council agreed to £1.53m for refurbishments to the car park as well as £3.5m for the High Street car park.

Grafton MSCP is due to be demolished as part of redevelopment plans within the next few years.

According to Worthing Borough Council its closure and the loss of spaces will place more importance on the need to provide a quality parking offering close to the town centre.

It is therefore proposing to increase the budget for the Buckingham Road works to facilitate a larger refurbishment programme.

This will be done by reallocating £800,000 earmarked for the cladding at the High Street car park and bringing the budget forward from 2021/22 into 2020/21.

The proposed changes are due to be discussed by the council’s executive members on Tuesday June 9.

An officers’ report said: “The investment by the council will be supporting the overall regeneration and economic growth of the town centre by providing a high quality and convenient parking facility.

“The improvements will contribute to ensuring the continued commercial strength of Worthing town centre as a vibrant retail, leisure and business location bringing greater footfall to local businesses.”
