The county council’s Environmental and Community Services Select Committee agreed to establish the Cycling Task and Finish Group on Wednesday June 10 held at Chichester’s County Hall.

The purpose of the group will be to ‘act as a critical friend’ in the development of a West Sussex Cycling and Walking Strategy, to consider how schemes are prioritised, and how stakeholders such as cycling forums can be better engaged in the future.

It will be chaired by Derek Whittington (Con, Fontwell) and is expected to publish a final report shortly before Christmas.

The West Sussex Cycle Forum, an umbrella group for cycle forums across the county, has welcomed the development of a Walking and Cycling Delivery Plan, but has called for a ‘step change’ in the quality of cycling infrastructure.

It has called for cycle paths with clear physical separation from motorised vehicles, and not just by paint.
