West Sussex County Council figures show that 1,178 were fixed last month down from 2,360 in June 2014.

According to the authority its two-year £30m Better Roads Programme, launched in 2014 to target rural and residential roads in need of repair, has played a key role in this drop.

“So it is reassuring the data is telling us that our road network is improving.

“When we first started this project, almost a quarter of our rural and residential roads were in need of major repair.

“That statistic is coming down all the time.

“We are on course to restore the state of the roads to the level it was before successive severe winters damaged them so harshly.”

Back in January 2014 4,117 potholes were recorded, a figure that peaked at 5,877 in March that year, before falling to its lowest level in October 2014 at 1,008.

In total 40,029 potholes were reported in West Sussex in 2014.

The £30m spent on road repair up to April 2016 is on top of the £9.4m the county council spends on its roads maintenance programme annually.
