The council’s last chief executive Kieran Stigant stood down in early 2014 and the position was split into two roles, a chief operating officer and a transformation director.

Gill Steward, who is currently the council’s chief operating officer on an interim contract, will leave in spring 2016.

Louise Goldsmith, leader of the council, announced Mrs Steward’s planned departure in a blog post.

She said: “The transformation phase comes to its conclusion in line with Gill’s contract ending next spring.

“For the next few months, Gill and I will continue to work together on tackling the big issues that the county faces, including the Government’s upcoming spending review, the council’s budget and working with our partners on developing our devolution proposals.

“Gill has been a fantastic COO and has achieved much. I and the Cabinet have very much enjoyed working with her and wish her much success in the future.”

WSCC’s previous chief executive Mark Hammond left the authority shortly after Mrs Goldsmith became leader in 2010 and was then replaced by Mr Stigant.
