Plans for an enormous mural stretching 50m by 10m have been submitted to cover the town centre road.

Worthing's very own Banksy, the anonymous artist Horace, has been commissioned to carry out the project if approved.

Local businessman Andy Sparsis said the project would rejuvenate and pomote the town and was a display of businesses fighting back against the pandemic, while protecting jobs through art and activism.

“The street art is a pop-up, fingers up provocational project to the pandemic, we are fighting back and we will prosper,“ he said.

Spelling out 'back in the game', the mural is a message that Worthing is back in business.

Plans to pedestrianise Portland Road have long been discussed but have been fast-tracked as part of Worthing's recovery from coronavirus lockdown.

Along with the closure of Montague Place, the pedestrianisation of town centre roads is seen as a way of enforcing social distancing while encouraging 'continental style' outdoor dining.

The mural has been commissioned by local businesses working alongside Worthing Borough Council and West Sussex County Council.
