Previous reviews carried out but not implemented by the Boundary Commission for England (BCE) were based on the number of MPs being reduced to 600, but this piece of work is based on the number of constituencies remaining at 650.

The number of seats in England would be 543, with an increase of seven across the South East region.

The new review, set to be completed in 2023, can now begin after the publication of Office for National Statistics Data on the number of electoral registrations from March 2020.

All recommended constituencies must have no less than 69,724 Parliamentary electors and no more than 77,062.

The BCE will now begin to develop initial proposals for how the new constituencies across England should be drawn up according to this new distribution and the permitted electorate range.

It hopes to publish these initial proposals for publication in the early summer and hear what residents think.

Tim Bowden, secretary to the Boundary Commission for England, said: “Today marks the start of our work to review the constituency boundaries in England.

“Parliament has set strict rules on greater equality of electorate size between the new constituencies – these rules and the increase in total number of constituencies in England mean that there is likely to be a large degree of change across the country.“

“Once we publish our initial proposals in the summer, we will need the help of residents in all regions to ensure that our proposals take account of local ties and best reflect the geography on the ground.

“Everyone’s views will help us recommend a well considered and practical set of new constituency boundaries in England.”
