Will Nick Herbert be re-elected as Arundel and South Downs MP?

He has been MP for the area since 2005, succeeding Howard Flight after comments made by Mr Flight about spending cuts went public.

Mr Herbert has been a vocal opponent of a second runway at Gatwick Airport, fracking, proposals for a new 10,000-home settlement near Henfield, and has criticised decisions made by planning inspectors to impose homes on local councils. He has also campaigned for a new Arundel bypass for the A27.

The four candidates challenging Mr Herbert are UKIP’s Peter Grace, Shweta Kapadia for the Lib Dems, Isabel Thurston of the Green Party, and Labour’s Christopher Wellbelove.

During the campaign hustings events were held at Steyning Grammar School on green issues, and in Arundel on local and national issues.

In 2010 Mr Herbert was re-elected as MP with 57.8 per cent of the vote, almost 30 percentage points ahead of his closest challenger Lib Dem Derek Deedman.

However Mr Grace will look to increase UKIP’s share of the vote in the area, especially after the party ran the Tories close across the South Downs in 2013’s county council elections.
