Worthing Leisure Centre to close for six days

The government’s roadmap out of lockdown allowed for gyms and leisure centres reopening on April 12.

But Worthing Leisure Centre, in Shaftesbury Avenue, will close to users again from May 6 to 11, while it hosts counts for the local elections.

An email to users from operator South Downs Leisure, entitled ‘Important update’, reads: “We are writing to inform you that we will be helping Adur & Worthing Councils ensure local government elections can take place this year, and as such, Worthing Leisure Centre will be closed from May 6 to 11 (inclusive) to host voting and vote counting.”

Adur and Worthing residents will go to the polls on Thursday, May 6, for district and borough-council elections, the county counci election, and the election of Sussex’s police and crime commissioner.

“We understand there may be frustration with the temporary closure, especially as we’ve only just reopened, but this really helps ensure the local democratic process can take place in a safe and secure location, with all necessary restrictions in place.

“This is a very positive move to ensure the community can vote with no concerns in the current climate, to hopefully help shape the future of the town for the better.”

“We have facilities at other local sites available for you to use and are looking to add extra at these sites to help accommodate you not being to attend at Worthing Leisure Centre. We will publish more information on the extra classes as soon as we can via our app and social media platforms.

“Why not get out and visit a different centre to see what they have to offer? And remember, it’s only for six days – it will seem a breeze after recent prolonged closures!”
