Sir Peter Bottomley, Worthing West MP, has submitted an Early Day Motion noting that emergency services were still treating the injured on Tuesday morning when Mr Farage ‘retweeted a message claiming that the terrorist attack was proof that the UK would be safer outside the EU’.

The two suicide bomb attacks in Belgium left 31 people dead and around 300 people injured.

Mr Farage, who is also a UKIP MEP for the South East, said on Twitter later he was ‘upset by events in Brussels today and even more depressed for the future’.

In an interview with the BBC he said he was ‘wholly justified’ to link the terrorist attacks to EU migration rules.

The Early Day Motion reads: “That this house notes that emergency services were still treating the injured when UKIP leader Nigel Farage retweeted a message claiming that the terrorist attack was proof that the UK would be safer outside the EU; remembers that after the Charlie Hebdo attack he spoke of Muslims as the fifth column, and told Fox News that were no-go areas for non-Muslims in the UK; and believes that such views should be challenged within and outside his party.”

It has so far been signed by eight other MPs including Green MP Caroline Lucas, several members of the SNP, and one member of Northern Ireland’s Social Democratic and Labour Party.

EDMs are formal motions submitted for debate in the House of Commons, although few are debate in Parliament.
