The annual event has been organised by the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust since 2005. The trust is a charity that aims to spread awareness of past and present genocides, as well as remember the millions of civilians who have fallen victim to them.

Sir Peter said: “We are fortunate to live in the peaceful and tolerant town of Worthing, where hate crimes rarely, if ever, occur.

“Holocaust Memorial Day is a date that rightly encourages us to remember the victims of past and present genocides, and to challenge hatred and persecution.

“Many constituents will be familiar with the Nazi holocaust between 1941-1945 which involved the systematic murder of millions of Jews.

“In addition to the Nazi persecution, it is important to be mindful of the many other genocides that have occurred in its wake in countries such as Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Sudan- the latter of which is tragically ongoing.”

This year, the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust’s theme is ‘Don’t Stand By.’

Sir Peter added: “We should all be confident in taking sides and standing up for what is right.

“As Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel said: ‘Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented’.”
