Poppy Appeal trench window display wins top prize

A Worthing shop's replica of a trench from the First World War has won first prize in a national competition.

Staff at The Good Cook Shop, in Warwick Street, created the Poppy Appeal window display last month and entered it in the competition run by Charles Viancin, one of their suppliers.

Owner David Goodenough revealed: “The great news is that we won first prize, which was £250 worth of stock, so as promised we are donating £250 to the Poppy Appeal.

“This means that along with 20 per cent of the sales of the Charles Viancin poppy products and our Poppy Appeal collection box, we raised a grand total of £475.

“Charles Viancin started out manufacturing heatproof silicone lids in many shapes, all inspired by nature, but have now branched out in to teapots and more.”

The trench was designed as a poignant representation of the human cost of war through the personal belongings left behind.

The display included a muddy puddle and footprints, suggestive of a soldier going ‘over the top’.

There was a period pocket watch stopped at five minutes to eleven, broken glasses frame, helmet, soldiers prayer book, shell casing, bayonet, Princess Mary tin from Christmas 1914 and other items.

A former employee who now works as a freelance illustrator created a letter from home to a soldier, which was trodden into the mud.

Out of the trench, past the barbed wire and sandbags, there was real grass growing and a display of silicone poppies against a green backdrop.
