It was confirmed last week that Poundworld will be replacing BHS on Montague Street, in Worthing.

The news had quite a negative response on the Herald’s social Facebook page, with comments saying the news came as ‘shocking’, ‘ridiculous’ and ‘a big shame’.

The value retailer, which is coming to Worthing for the first time, is replacing BHS which closed on July 30 and will open on Thursday, October 13, creating 30 retail jobs.

However the news came as very disappointing to nearby residents, who had high hopes for Primark to take over the large space – which created a large discussion on the social media site.

Facebook user Zoe Perkins said the Poundworld Extra store ‘will not drive footfall into the town and make the town centre more upmarket’.

She added: “This is yet another mistake from the council and all parties involved.”

Situated in the former BHS unit, on Montague Street, it will be the company’s 343rd store and is part of the value retailer’s expansion plan to open 60 new stores this year.

Facebook user Andrew Birdsey claimed the opening of the store will ‘lower the tone of an already struggling town centre’.

Dariusz Slabik, area manager at Poundworld, said the firm was excited to be opening in Worthing for the first time and to be able to offer customers their favourite brands and products at the best prices.

“We really are passionate about helping people save as much money as possible on their weekly shop,” he added.

Poundworld is a leading value variety retailer with more than 340 stores.
