Worthing Planning Committee will vote to determine if the mill, which dates back to 1615, and its surrounding land will be protected from housing developers.

The proposal came from councillor Tom Wye, who fears the mill will be torn down without protection.

Tom, who is also the chairman of the High Salvington Mill Trust, said: “I am very pleased this is going to the Worthing Planning Committee. I would like to invite them up to the mill. A mill has been there since 1615, and there are people living in Worthing who don’t know its there.

“It is worth saving. I want it to be there for my great-grandchildren and for generations to come.”

The mill was previously threatened in 2012, when the number of volunteers required to run the mill dwindled.

It was saved by a campaign of 100 volunteers who came together and were able to push forward with the mill’s summer fete, the biggest source of income for the Mill Trust.

The mill has served a number of functions in its 400-year history, starting as a working mill for 150 years until its closure in 1897.

It was renovated in 1907 and then became a tea room until the 1950s.

Worthing Borough Council purchased it in 1959, and today it runs guided tours for the public after being reinstated in the 1990s.
