Protesters fight on over homes

Environmentalists have vowed to keep up the pressure after failing to achieve a public inquiry into proposed development at Titnore Lane, Worthing.

Members of Protect Our Woodland wrote to the Government Office for the South East (GOSE) for a review of the 850-home development.

In its reply GOSE said the Secretary of State was happy for the local planning authority to make the decision as there was 'not sufficient conflict with national planning policies'.

John Clark of Protect Our Woodland said members had not ruled out direct action in their fight against the development.

"We are deeply concerned that this refusal of our justifiable request for a public enquiry will now lead to non'“violent direct action from others," said Mr Clark.

"It would not surprise me if the developers and road builders became the centre of attraction to Swampy-type actions, last seen in Newbury in the 1990s.

"For a government that states its determination to protect the environmental heritage of the countryside and then not to examine in public this massive greenfield development, is breathtaking."
