WRVS Chesham House Centre in South Street, Lancing, was donated £12,000 by Sussex Mark Masons.

The donation will go towards the creation of a community café in Chesham House.

Annick Lynn, service manager of Chesham House Centre, said: “We are extremely grateful for this generous gesture – this will make a huge difference to the people of Lancing. This WRVS centre is a much-loved meeting place for older people. The provision of a café will allow us to put in place even more events and activities that we at WRVS provide to enhance the health and well-being of local older residents.”

Although, generally, services at the centre are aimed towards older people, the café, when complete, will be open to the general public.

The donation followed a father-and-son team volunteering at the centre to build a fence.

This led the father, a Mason himself, to put forward Chesham House as a beneficiary.

Sussex Mark Masons later approved the application.

WRVS Chesham House Centre will hold a vintage tea party on Tuesday, April 30, between 2pm and 5pm, to raise further funds.

Tickets are £5.
