Pupils pay respects and learn about horrors of war

Remembering those who fought for Britain during the first world war has proved a powerful theme at Downview Primary School in Bognor Regis.

Pupils from Year 2 dressed up in army uniforms as part of their history studies and re-enacted scenes from life in the trenches.

They also staged a service of Remembrance on November 11, as a mark of respect to the millions who died during the war.

Teacher Sam Docherty said: "We have a number of activities around Remembrance Sunday and on the theme of the first world war.

"We made trenches in the halls and had pupils doing things like digging mud out of them and re-enacting 'going over the top'.

"They learned a lot about how awful it must have been for people in those conditions and they really understood how it must have been for soldiers.

"We watched a really good episode of Blue Peter in which one of the presenters went out to experience what life would have been like in the trenches.

"We've tried to teach them war is not a good thing and think they have really gained a lot from these activities."
