Pupils take part in some ‘egg-stra’ special lessons as Easter nears

YOUNGSTERS have been learning all about looking after animals in the run-up to Easter.

Reception class children at Broadwater First and Middle School have been monitoring a clutch of eggs, just waiting for them to hatch.

And, just before Easter, the first chicks emerged – with the children on hand to care for them.

The eggs were provided by Northdale Veterinary Practice, in Victoria Road, Worthing, which has been visiting local reception classes as part of National Pet Month.

Staff have also provided free resource packs, which enabled the schools to create role-play areas, complete with a toy dog to practice pet care with. One of Northdale’s veterinary team then visited the schools to speak to the children about pet ownership and gave them a chance to see more live animals, such as guinea pigs and chickens.

Jan Pannell, of Northdale’s practice management team, said the idea had been well received.

She said: “It’s incredibly important to raise awareness as there are increasing numbers of cruelty cases and abandonments.

“If you can speak to children at a young age it will stay with them and they will be more responsible.

“It has gone down very well and has had a great response.”
