Readers would put the brakes on 20mph plan for Worthing

READERS have made their views known on a proposal to lower speed limits in Worthing’s residential roads – and it is a resounding ‘NO’.

For two weeks, the Herald invited people to respond to a simple yes-or-no question: ‘would you like to see a 20mph limit in most residential streets in Worthing?’.

Readers responded in their droves, and were overwhelmingly in favour of not introducing the lower speed limits, with more than four out of every five forms – 83 per cent of those sent in – being marked ‘no’.

The 20s Plenty group has been campaigning for lower limits for a number of years.

Campaign leader Duncan Kay said he was ‘very surprised’ about the findings of the poll, and that he has generally found the reverse, with 70-80 per cent in support of the idea.

He said: “I am very surprised, because that is the first poll I am aware of that has come back negative, other than online polls.

“It really doesn’t bother me. We are going to have a proper vote on in.”
