A service at St Mary de Haura Church, in the town centre, followed wreath laying at 11am at the War Memorial in East Street.

Stuart Christmas, 84, from Lancing was among those who laid a wreath. He wore his two medals, one for his five-year service in the RAF, where his force defended the Suez Canal in Egypt back in 1951. The other medal was for his 32-year voluntary service in the Special Constabulary Police Force.

Mr Christmas said: ‘‘My mother died in the Second World War when I was 12 years old. It was very moving to see so many young people here today who will be able to keep the memory alive when all of us oldies have passed away. It’s alway such a great turnout and the parade was wonderful.’’

David Slark, 52, chairman of Shoreham Army Cadets Force and ex Royal Military Police, laid a wreath on behalf of the Royal British Legion.

He said: ‘‘It’s been the best support this year. I have been the chairman of the Shoreham branch for the last nine years and we have done some great things. a

“We are now trying to move into the 21st century, we are like dinosaurs in this computer age that we live in but we are getting there. The day was fantastic and it was a tremendous turn out.’’

Sergeant Louise Snuggs-Lee, 34, from Lancing is an instructor for the young army cadets who took part in the parade. As a woman, she has a particular duty of care to the female cadets and also teaches first aid.

She said: ‘‘I have been a volunteer instructor for five years and I do it because it enriches young people’s lives and I helped train the children for this parade. We have been doing drills every night for the last two weeks and the they were all great. It’s been a very emotional day.”
