Rescue centre open day success

Horse Rescue Centre at Ashburnham held its most successful open day ever on Sunday.

Around 1,000 visited throughout the day enabling the charity to raise 4,700.

Entertainment was provided by belly dancers and performances by the Senlac High Steppers baton twirlers and the Battle-based Freestyle dance group.

Other attractions included classic cars, and archery display and birds of prey as well as a variety of stalls.

The Pearly King and Princess of St Pancreas led a traditional Cockney sing-along.

A dog show attracted 85 entries with owners entering their dogs in classes for novelty, pedigree and agility.

Overall winner was Philippa with dog KIzzie, while Dorothy was runner up with Abby.

Best Puppy went to Pat with Greg and April's dog Snoopy won the agility section, completing the course in 47 seconds.

Dawg Biscuits, of St Leonards, sponsored the prizes and the judges were Don and Barbara Mackay. Mick and Julie Honeyball were stewards.

Tony Smith, who runs the centre, said: "This was our best ever open day. It was a fantastic amount. I think the good weather helped and the dog show we run is growing in popularity all the time."
