Three fire engines were called to West Street at 9.26am this morning (March 12), with crews having to rescue one resident from the building.

A spokesman for West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said one engine from Shoreham and two from Worthing were on the scene, as well as the ambulance service.

“One resident was rescued by a neighbour prior to our arrival, and crews quickly located another resident and brought them to safety. All persons are now accounted for,” said the spokesman.

“The fire broke out in the first floor bathroom, and firefighters wearing breathing apparatus extinguished the fire using one high pressure hose reel, a safety jet and a covering jet.

“Crews remain at the scene and are ventilating the property and using a thermal imaging camera to ensure there are no further signs of fire within the property.

“People are urged to avoid the area for the time being to allow crews to work safely. Residents living nearby should keep their windows and doors closed.”
