The incident in St Lawrence Avenue happened at around 3am. Neighbours reported the driver then got out of the vehicle and started banging on people’s doors, before running away on foot.

Stan Oxley, 58, who lives next door to where the car crashed, said he was ‘worried’ for his family.

He said: “I looked out of the window and there was a man and we heard him shouting at the top of his voice, banging, and trying to get into houses.

“I was worried and we didn’t know what was happening.

“Thankfully, the police came very quickly, and it seemed like a number of people had phoned them.”

One resident said she heard noises downstairs, and found blood on her front door the next morning.

Another neighbour added: “He seemed very stressed and agitated and he was in the road shouting.”
