The Marlipins, on Shoreham high street, reopened its doors last Wednesday after undergoing two-and-a-half weeks of decorating work.

The £75,000 refurbishment project by the pub’s operator, Punch, has given the building a ‘freshen up’, according to pub manager Ashley Carter.

He said: “A really nice job has been done.

“I’m very pleased with how its turned out.”

The 31-year-old said the pub had played a ‘significant role’ in his life.

Starting out as a pot washer aged 14, he gradually worked his way up through the business, becoming pub manager in 2007.

“It’s been very interesting to witness all the comings and goings in the pub over the past 17 years,” he said. “During all that time, the Marlipins has never lost any of its character.

“This is the first significant refurbishment we’ve had since I first came to the pub and it’s looking better than ever.”

The exterior of the building has been repainted and new furniture has been added to the pub’s conservatory.

Further redecoration, which has taken place throughout the interior of the pub, has carefully preserved the ‘historic vibe’ of the building, according to Mr Carter.

The traditional pub, which serves a range of cask ales, wines and spirits, was established in 1664 and is located next to the Marlipins museum, which could date back as far as the 12th century and is a Grade II listed building.

The courtyard at the back of the building, which is very popular among customers, has also reopened, Mr Carter added.

Janne Sedgwick, openings manager for Punch, said: “Ashley is a great publican and has created the perfect place to relax and unwind at The Marlipins.

“This has been a sensitive refurbishment to improve the decor and facilities without detracting from any of the pub’s unique charm and character.”
