Review: Young Guns’ Brighton return whets appetite for album number three

YOUNG GUNS marked a three-year absence from Brighton with a blistering set spanning their three album catalogue at The Haunt last night.

Time away from the city clearly hasn’t harmed their popularity – the sold out venue was bouncing from start to finish as the five-piece, led by frontman Gustav Wood, ripped through one hook-laden anthem after another.

The likes of I Want Out, Dearly Departed, Rising Up and monumental set closer Bones had fans in full voice with hands outstretched, and there was of course the customary mosh pit.

Unsurprisingly, the band rock harder live than on record, with drummer Ben Jolliffe setting the tone with heavy hard rock beats.

At times the vocals weren’t high enough in the mix but Wood’s boundless enthusiasm and commitment to keeping the crowd energised more than compensated.

As many have stated before, the competition in the melodic alt-rock scene in the UK has been strong for years now, with the likes of You Me at Six, Deaf Havana, Don Broco, Lower Than Atlantis and many more all achieving commercial success.

Young Guns definitely deserve a place towards the top of the tree and when third album Ones and Zeros finally drops in June they could surpass all others.
