Stoolball: Last Tuesday[29th] the Mixed played at Hooe witht he hosts batting first Ian Kitson[1-6] took the first wicket while JJ Boast[1-11] took the second aided by a catch from Graham Clark but the hosts recouped before skipper Richard Apps[2-9], helped with catches from Abigail Fifield and Graham, had them reeling on 72-4. It was 72-5 with Diane Kitson[1-5] taking a wicket but we failed to capitalise as the hosts finished their 12 overs on 146-5. Our reply did not start well with Sophie Turner[2] caught in the first over and when Abigail[0] went in the second we were struggling on 12-2 but opener Josh Lewis[73] was joined by Penny Clark[5] who put on 42 and when Lisa Fifield[18] came in her partnership with Josh was also 42 before both fell in the 8th over. Ian[1], Graham[9], Diane[7n.o.] and JJ[1n.o.] saw the innings out but fell 22 runs of the target. Last Sunday the Mixed team played at Icklesham’ Tournament and started against Crowburnham in sunny but windy conditions. We batted first and lost opener Sophie Turner[2] with just 8 runs on the board but a second wicket partnership of 20 between Josh Lewis[20] and Melinda Mackay[4] was broken when both were out in the 3rd over which brought Ian Kitson[11n.o.] and debutant Charlie Apps[0] to the crease but Charlie was caught and Diane Kitson[1] was run out before skipper Richard Apps[1n.o.] saw the innings out on 42-5. Our bowling and fielding was tight with Melinda’ over going for just 4 runs and when Richard[1-19] completed the 2nd over the scores were level on 23 but Diane[0-23] saw Gwylym[21] and Tracey[29n.o.] reach their target in the 3rd over but there was a wicket for Josh Lewis[1-10] aided by a catch from Ian as Crowburnham finished their innings on 56-2. Brightling were next with 2 wickets falling in the second over the first to a run out and the second JJ Boast held onto a catch from Richard’[1-13] bowling with Brightling on 15-2 and when Diane[1-14] took the next wicket they were on 28-3, however the last over was well bowled by Josh[1-8] with Diane taking a catch and another run out saw Brightling end on 48-5. In reply Ian[12] and Melinda[27] put on 41 before Melinda was bowled and Charlie[0] was unlucky to be caught again. Diane[5n.o.] and Richard[9n.o.] took us to 61-3 and a 13 run victory. We batted first against Pett with Richard[8] and Charlie[3] opening a very poor batting performance with nobody reaching double figures as JJ[6], Diane[7n.o.] and Josh[9n.o.] saw us finish on 42-3. The first over from Melinda[2-16] was eventful as Richard and JJ took catches and when the next wicket went down in the second over to Richard[1-9] it was looking good but Anya[30n.o.] and Barry[16n.o.] saw Pett end on 62-3. Our final match was against the hosts Icklesham who lost their first wicket on the first ball from Melinda[1-16] aided by a fabulous catch by Charlie but the game was halted for 10 minutes when Heidi, going for a run, crashed into Melinda and had to go off. Karen[17] and George[10] put on 31 before Josh[1-15] caught George and the next ball saw Karen depart as JJ took the catch from Diane’[1-8] bowling as the hosts finished on 49-3. We also lost our first wicket on the first ball as JJ[0] was caught but a second wicket partnership of 39 between Diane[10] and Josh[29n.o.] steadied the innings but when Diane was run out Sophie[5] joined Josh to win the match by 7 runs. Although we did not reach the final there was a medal for Richard who got the most wickets(men) and JJ for the most catches(men) but overall the team performed well in all but one game and the introduction of Charlie was very encouraging. This Sunday is Brightling Ladies Tournament at Netherfield[10.30a.m.] while the Mixed are at home to Staplecross on Tuesday[12th] and Brightling Ladies come to the Clappers on Thursday[14th] with both matches starting at 6.45p.m.
