Rustington unites to pay its respects to war dead

On Monday (August 4), a special blessing and commemoration ceremony was held at Rustington’s First World War memorial garden, in Ash Lane.

It was marking the centenary since Britain declared war against German and its allies – a conflict which resulted in millions of casualties on both sides.

The service was led by Rev Zachary Allen and Rev Bob Sneddon and saw dignitaries from across the area, including Arun District Council’s chairman Dougal McConachie, alongside councillors from Rustington Parish Council and the village’s in bloom committee, joining.

The event was opened by parish councillor Sue Lines, who gave an introductory speech, followed by a hymn.

Rev Allen following, by saying: “We have gathered here today to remember all those from this community who were caught up in the courageous but tragic events for the First World War.

“We remember those killed in action, or by disease; the bereaved, the lost, the families which were shattered; the wounded, maimed and injured as well as those who held in silence unspeakable memories of warfare.”
