Rye’s ancient tradition

RYE kept up its ancient tradition of throwing hot pennies in a ceremony which saw John Breeds elected for a second term of office.

Monday’s Mayor Making event was more low-key this year after being shifted from its usual May Bank Holiday Monday day-time slot due to the local elections.

Instead the ceremony took place on a cool and cloudy Monday evening.

It meant there were not quite as many children scrambling to catch the pennies thrown by the newly elected Mayor from an upper window at the Town Hall.

Deputy Mayor Lorna Hall stood down prior to the election and there was a close run fight for the position on Monday with Granville Bantick and Shaun Rogers polling seven votes each. It needed the Mayor’s casting vote to see Shaun Rogers elected to the position.
