Sadness after Worthing teenager's sudden death

A NEIGHBOUR has spoken of his sadness at hearing of the death of a teenager in a flat at East Preston.

Daryl Hobson, of Station Parade, first realised that something was wrong when his son told him there were five police cars and an ambulance outside shops beneath the flats, on Saturday, March 21.

The emergency services had rushed to the scene after the body of 17-year-old Robert Janes, of Worthing, was found in the flat at 11am.

Paramedics were unable to revive the teenager, who police said was known to have been out in East Preston with friends the evening before, and was staying with a friend overnight.

Forensic team

As time went on, said Mr Hobson, more police vehicles and officers turned up, including the forensic science team, detectives and vans with officers carrying out door-to-door inquiries in the area.

Items were carried out of the flat in bags.

"It's very sad this has happened to someone so young," said Mr Hobson.

"My partner burst into tears when she heard the news."

Police investigation

An investigation into Robert's death was launched and several witnesses have provided information to police.

Detective Sergeant Alan Pack, from Arun CID, said: "We are not treating this as suspicious but we are conducting a thorough and detailed inquiry which will be passed to the Coroner.

"Several of Robert's friends have already provided witness statements for which I am grateful but if anyone else has useful information then I would ask that they would contact us."

The cause of death is still unexplained and will be subject of a post mortem examination later in the week.

Appeal

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 0845 60 70 999 quoting Operation Harbury (serial 723 of March 21st) or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
