Safer Cycling visits Worthing High School

It was the latest in a series of visits to secondary schools, organised by firefighter Gavin Ross with help of work colleague Gavin McCourty and in conjunction with the Worthing Cycle Forum and Sussex Police.

The first presentation was made in September at St Andrew’s High School in Worthing. It featured a light-hearted introductory cycling video followed by various group participation scenarios.

Since then, Safer Cycling has also visited Davison and Durrington high schools in Worthing.

Gavin said: “Following the serious accident involving a local paper boy on a dark early morning earlier in the year, the project has also expanded its scope to include two sessions for local paper boys and girls.”

Day Aggregates is supporting the project by providing an eight-wheel lorry for the visits and Chris Cooling, group transport manager, went along to Worthing High to talk to students.

He explained the latest equipment fitted to the lorries, which aid drivers’ visibility, and demonstrated the blind spots for HGVs and LGVs.

Gavin added: “We were able to expand the scope of the project to include all pupils who cycle to school. At the end of the presentation, participants had strap-on front and rear lights fitted to their bicycles.”
