Salon is '˜victim of own success'

Staffed by experienced volunteers, the salon offers a selection of hair, nail and beauty treatments but it needs more volunteers to keep the service going.

Mandy Hendy, salon coordinator, said “People are so surprised that we offer a service like the hair salon, but word has spread and we have become a victim of our own success – which is great as it provides much needed income to the hospice with its work.

“We have people wanting appointments, but not enough stylists to help, so we’re looking for some more to join us.”

Gio Young, partner and stylist with husband, Gary, at The Grove Experience on Grove Road, volunteers at the hospice salon for a few hours each week.

She said, “Three of our staff give up some time to the hospice each week and we love it.

“For me, it’s rewarding and enriching and provides a real change from the normal salon environment.

“I would encourage other salons to suggest their staff give it a go. It’s such a good cause, too, it makes you feel engaged in something really worthwhile.”

The hospice is also holding an open evening on April 19 from 5pm and 7pm at the hospice on Broadwater Way, by the big Sainsbury’s.

All proceeds from the salon will go to St Wilfrid’s Hospice is a registered charity serving a population of 235,000 from Eastbourne, Polegate, Pevensey, Seaford, Hailsham, Heathfield, Uckfield and everywhere in between.

Fundraising is vital to the deliver the care, as it costs more than £11,000 a day to run all the services provided by St Wilfrid’s Hospice.

The charity supports 1,100 patients a year.

All care is free of charge for the patients and St Wilfrid’s only receives 25 per cent of its funding from the NHS.

However, local charitable donations, including proceeds from the salon and coffee shop at the state-of-the-art site on Broadwater Way, fund the rest of the cost of running the hospice.
