Salvation Army Band plays anniversary concert

Around 250 people filled The Salvation Army Citadel, in Crescent Road, Worthing, to hear the band perform.

Bandmaster of the Chicago Staff Band William Himes, flew in from the United States especially to conduct the band.

Daphne Slator, is the wife of Worthing bandmaster Alan Slator and plays the second horn in the band.

“It was a hugely successful evening with a capacity crowd,” she said.

“Everybody had a wonderful evening. People are still talking about it as being a memorable weekend.”

Daphne said the band often played a lot of music written by Mr Himes.

“He’s a lovely lovely chap. He has been recognised for his expertise and skills.

“He had a wonderful time. He thoroughly enjoyed Worthing. He has a wonderful talent with people. He’s not precious. He conducts this internationally famous band but was more than happy to stay in Worthing, encouraging the band and giving them tips. It was amazing actually.”

Years ago, band member Maurice Ozanne worked with Mr Himes at the music editorial department in London and the pair have stayed in touch.

Mr Himes has received an Order of the Founder Award – recognition for meritorious Christian example, witness and service.

The Worthing band have had a busy year, playing at numerous public events.

The band kickstarted its year back in May with a joint concert with Davison Worthing Youth Concert Band.

In June, a small ensemble supported the Worthing Community Play ‘The Just Cause’. The band was also visited by the Salvation Army Symphonic Wind Ensemble – a mixture of Salvation Army members and friends from other Christian denominations.

The band provided music for the Worthing Bird Man Competition in July, as well as performing at a concert in Arundel Cathedral ‘Music for a Summers Evening’ with all funds donated to St Barnabas Hospice.

Last month, the Band held a Songs of Praise Service on the Sunday afternoon of Findon Sheep Fair.
