School performs sold-out foundling drama

Pupils from the school’s drama department performed in a production of Coram Boy.

The production ran from Wednesday, November 16 to Saturday, November 20 and was directed by head of drama Matt Smith, with musical adaptations by Neil Cox, director of chapel music at the school.

According to the school, each night was virtually sold-out.

Coram Boy is based on the award-winning novel by Jamila Gavin, published in 2000.

Set in the eighteenth century, the story follows Aaron, the deserted son of the heir to the Ashbrook Estate; and Toby, a young boy saved from an African slave ship.

The show deals with themes of child cruelty.

It was premiered on the National Theatre’s Olivier Stage in November 2005 and the music includes adaptations of Handel’s Messiah, as well as original songs, period-style dance, and chamber music.

Lianne Jarrett, a spokesperson for the school, said: “The Lancing College production was the culmination of several months of work: students were trained in choreography and stage combat, as well as in acting and singing.

“The magnificent costumes came from Harvey’s of Hove, and the props were provided by the National Theatre.”
