A PAIR of Goring Scouts will be heading off on a challenging expedition to Tanzania.

Katie Gleeson, 16, and Katy Jones, 14, both members of the Goring-based Phoenix Explorer Scout Unit, are going on a four-week expedition to Africa in the summer to help build a village hospital.

The girls applied to be part of the international Scout and Guide expedition last January and were selected to be part of the 32-strong group.

Richard Young, leader of the Phoenix ESU, said: “Phoenix ESU has a strong track record of providing outstanding development opportunities for the young people in Goring. It is most unusual for a Scout group to have two of its members selected to go on the same international expedition and helps put the Scouting activities of Goring and the Worthing District on the map.”

The girls will help with the major ongoing community project to build a medical centre in the remote village of Itete in the Ulanga District of Tanzania, where there is a drastic need for improved medical services for the 9,000 villagers.

The expedition group is aiming to raise more than £30,000 towards the building project.

Katy said: “I’m so excited to be going on this expedition. I know it is going to be a lot of hard work but realise how important it is to the people in the village. The new medical centre will be a great step forward to help with the malarial treatments, vaccinations, disease prevention and education.”

Katie added: “Training and preparation for the expedition has already involved many long weekends of outdoor camping in all weathers and has included first aid and survival training. The extreme remoteness of location of means we will have to be totally self-sufficient.”

Before the girls head off, they must each raise £2,500 to pay for their expedition fees.

They have organised a murder mystery evening on March 31 at St Mary’s hall, Goring. Tickets are £9, include supper and a performance called Murder at the village hall by the cast of Goring Region Occasional Players Ensemble.
