Scrap bank holiday parking charges, says MP

BANK holiday parking charges should be scrapped according to Lewes MP Norman Baker.

Mr Baker said East Sussex County Council has made itself hugely unpopular because of the 'heavy-handed' and 'disproportionate' penalty enforcement within the town

He said: 'People in Lewes will tolerate a parking scheme but not one that charges for Bank Holidays, tickets the cars of vicars who are giving services and hearses.

'It is a great pity that East Sussex County Council has taken this attitude towards Lewes. It is as if they are trying to squeeze every last penny that they can out of the town.'

He said he receives a huge number of complaints about parking and people outside of the longer no longer visit Lewes because the parking situation is so unreasonable.

He said: "I am calling for the county council to review the enforcement of this scheme and to introduce a more sensible light-touch approach that local people can support.

'As a start, they should immediately abolish charges for Bank Holiday parking.'
