Second thoughts on Goring playground

WORTHING Council may have second thoughts about siting a new £100,000 children's playground at the southern end of Goring Greensward.

As a result of the recent public consultation over the Lottery-funded scheme, the council's cabinet will be recommended on Monday, February 2, to consider whether the scheme should go ahead '“ and, if so, agree the location.

Of the 1,004 responses received through the council's Vibe magazine and online questionnaires, 50.3 per cent were for the proposal, and 48.11 against. There were 16 "don't knows".

In addition, there was one petition received in support of the playground '“ with about 250 signatures '“ and two against '“ 2,000-plus signatures.

Labour parliamentary candidate for Worthing West, Ian Ross, is supporting plans for the new Greensward playground.

Mr Ross said: "Goring Greensward belongs to everyone and it exists for the enjoyment of all the community.

"I understand the concerns of many local residents, especially those who have signed the petition against a new playground.

"I agree it is important to preserve our open spaces. However, it is important to put the plans into perspective.

"The playground would occupy an extremely small area of the Greensward. These plans present local families in Goring with a fantastic opportunity for their children to play."
