Shop reaches £100,000 funding milestone

Worthing Mencap, in South Farm Road, opened in May, 2012, with all money raised going towards helping people with learning disabilities in the area.

“It’s an amazing achievement for such a small shop to have raised so much money in such a short time,” said development officer Janet Williamson.

The charity also runs Buddys Café, opened in 2007, in the same road, which also acts as a drop-in centre and information hub.

Debbie Cockrill, administrator at the café, said: “Considering we are not in the town centre we have done amazingly well, a lot of which is down to the great support from the local community.

“It’s such a lovely, welcoming environment down here and great that people can see the money raised by the shop is going to good use.”

Worthing town crier Bob Smytherman was on hand to give a speech outside the shop on Thursday to mark the milestone.

He said it was an ‘incredible achievement’ that would not have happened without the support of volunteers and the local community.
