A Hunter Hawker aircraft crashed into the A27 at Shoreham at 1.20pm this afternoon, and police have confirmed seven dead and a number of injured.

The air show was suspended for the rest of the day.

However, in 2007, when there was a fatal crash involving a Hawker Hurricane, the show continued as normal.

But that accident happened north of the A27, on land close to Lancing College, and did not damage the A27 or directly affect access to the airfield from the north.

The RAFA Shoreham Airshow statement said: “At about 1.20pm an aircraft hit several cars on the A27 just to the north of Shoreham Airport, where the Shoreham Airshow is taking place. There have been several casualties but we have no further information on these at the moment.

“The A27 has been closed in both directions and drivers are asked to avoid the area until further notice.

“Further information will be released as soon as possible.”

The A27 is closed at Lancing and to the north of Hove and is expected to remain closed for some considerable time.
